The 9th Ephoreia of Byzantine Antiquities is a Regional Service of the Ministry of Culture which functions on a Directorate level. It is located in Thessaloniki and is responsible for the Prefectures of Thessaloniki, Kilkis and Pieria.
The Ephoreia’s responsibilities comprise all issues pertaining to the preservation, protection and safekeeping of antiquities, as well as to the recovery, conservation, scientific study and promotion of ancient remains and post-Byzantine religious monuments and the display of antiquities in museums. It is also responsible for the planning, surveyance, management and execution of all archaeological projects; the conservation, reparation, restoration and promotion of monuments and archaeological sites, as well as of their surroundings, natural or not; the implementation of the afore mentioned works under self-supervision and on an ex-post basis; the performance of scientific research, as well as the publication of all archaeological finds; and the management of the monuments, archaeological sites, museums and collections which lie within the Service’s own area of responsibility and are owned by the State. Finally, the Ephoreia has to notify the Local Monuments Committees of all pertinent archaeological issues and see to the enforcement of the current legislation on the protection of antiquities.
The Ephoreia’s members of staff contribute to its work in numerous ways. Besides executing systematic and rescue excavations and other archaeological projects, they may also engage in setting-up and organizing permanent and temporary exhibitions and see to the development and operation of archaeological sites as well as to the lay-out, operation and promotion of museums - always according to the Service’s own needs and irrespective of the sub-department to which they may have been allocated.
